My Business With The Cloud

The image above is of my friend Caitlin Price shooting an installation by the artist Spencer Finch, currently on view at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, part of Finch's show 'My Business With The Cloud'. It is the inaugural show for the Corcoran's NOW series, which will showcase emerging and mid-career artists.  Last month, we were approached by the Corcoran to create a musical work for the NOW at Night event taking place on October 1st. They asked us to create something using Finch's work as a sort of jumping off point. I really liked that they were open to (and in fact initiated) the idea of having a musical component that was crafted for the event and in conjunction with the artwork.  Today, Caitlin and I visited the exhibit and she took a hard-drive's worth of photos of cloud (above), the centerpiece of Finch's show. We will then take those scanned images and turn them into musical information based on their composition, light and color. These noises will serve as a sort of 'sonic DNA' from which we'll build our set.

'My Business With The Cloud' is one of the more impressive shows I've seen in Washington in some time--regardless of whether or not you're able to attend the NOW event on October 1st (which, admittedly, may be a little out of some people's price range), it's well worth a visit for both Finch's work as well as their recently exhumed permanent collection.
